Spotlight on the Retro Kid!

Aurelius Battaglia is just one of the hundreds of wonderful illustrators that have been featured on the Flickr group Retro Kid. Helmed by animation ace Ward Jenkins, this pool of amazing vintage children's illustrations ( from kid's book, magazines, records, toy packaging and many other sources ) is added to daily by over 1,200 members who share some of their favourite images from their collections.
Two and a half years worth ( more than 4,000 images! ) including my latest batch of goodies ( one of which is pictured above ) awaits your perusal. So strap on those Lund's and schuss your way to the Retro Kid!

In this corner... The Whitman Kid!

Advertising character booster Waffle Whiffer's running a little "Color Your Own Whitman Kid" dealy over at his Flickr right now. Check it out for a groovy gander at some varied takes on this advertising icon of the the late 60s, 70s and 80s. I, for one, remember his smiling, letter-bedecked visage adorning a multitude of my 1970s birthday presents - from books and puzzles to comics and card games. That's right- it's cheap ( well... actually free! ) to enjoy some newly posted work from the always popular illustrator Charles Harper over at my Flickr. Wonderfully stylized birdies, crawfish, people and kangaroos - what more could you ask for?!

One of my favourite illustrators of children's material is Jerry Smath. I recently came across a large collection of vintage kid's magazines chock-full of his stylized, two-colour work and will be featuring some of it on the ever-so-addictive photo sharing site Flickr.
