Happy Canada Day weekend everyone! And what better way to celebrate Canada than by posting a bunch of wacky superhero art by kid Glen! If this hasn't turned you off already than be sure to take a trip back in time at Flickr to see the Fantastic Four battle the evil Space Monster of Nostalg IV, Super Glen and his trusty canine companion Super Banjo, and a spandex-clad would-be superhero's plan foiled by lack of a Toonie!
It doesn't get more Canadian than that!

Know What?

Know Mag #11 starts appearing on newstands this week a with a focus on the science behind crows and ravens. I know blackbirds aren't exactly either of the aforementioned but I threw them into the mix as well in this pie-filled puzzle, one of four I wrote and illustrated for the new issue.

Kayak Kraziness!

Canada's favourite history magazine for kids, Kayak hits the stands this week with issue 16.
I also found out through the grapevine that Kayak will be up-sizing from their current 5.25" x 8" format to a big 6.25" x 9.375" later in the year. That means 39.5% more me on the cover.
Ain't life great!

Diggin' Through the Vault Pt. 1

Howdy folks!!! This is the first in a series of occasional posts where I'll be digging through my old files and seeing what I uncover. One man's trash is another's treasure so .....

First up for today is one printed and one rejected cover for Monday Magazine, a local alternative weekly newspaper. I ended up doing four or five covers for these fine folks in '97 and '98. One of which you will find above, "Secrets of Victoria" ( not to be confused with a certain woman's underthings retailer. Now THAT would have been a sweet contract! ) This was back in my pre-Photoshop days when I coloured all my work with markers ( thank you Xylene for my current lapses of memory! ). I remember having a tough time trying to get the green and gray areas flat without any masking. Ahhh... the good old days.

My favourite covers for Monday though were the ones they didn't pick. Take for instance the example below... Canadian PM Jean Chretien, Bill Clinton, Indonesian President Suharto and the gang were going to be in Vancouver for for the annual APEC ( Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation ) meeting. Although the big news out of the event concerned the RCMP's handling of protesters, beforehand the focus was on wealth. So I roughed up this Godzilla-style cover. The editor instead picked a roller-coaster themed cover in which I had the world leaders in a coaster car at the top of a peak enjoying their fantastic wealth. My style has changed a bit in ten years but I still like this wacky cover.

See you next time!

How do!

How Magazine, the mag for graphic-design professionals has joined the growing ranks of fans of Design Inspiration with a mention on their swanky blog of my interview with the aforementioned entity. Plus, they've been design-conscious enough to spruce up their pixelated pages with a couple of pretty drawings by Mrs. Mullaly's little boy Glen!

Feeling Blue?

Dave's Mechanical Pencils, a lovingly obsessive blog from New Zealand that features reviews of modern and vintage mechanical pencils as well as erasers, leads and associated writing implements has asked me to expound on my use of non-repro blue mechanical pencil leads and the way I use them in my work. Not wanting to exacerbate the long simmering antagonism between Canadians and New Zealanders ( ongoing since the bloody but short-lived Cano-Kiwi War of 1932 ) I diplomatically agreed.
So grab your Sanfords, Shaeffers and Eversharps and head on over for a step-by-step, behind the scene view of one of my illustrations in progress from pencil sketch to print.

ME, ME, ME!!!
