John Huehnergarth at Flickr

HUEhnergath is an appropriate name for an illustrator with such a vibrant palette! Check out some wild examples of Mr. H's work from a Pixie Books version of Alice in Wonderland from 1952 over at my Flickr.

Thanks very much for stopping by Nils. I know there's other illustrators out there who admire your dad's work.
Do you know of any online biographies or lists of his published work so we can learn more about him and his art?

Do you know if Mr. Huehnergart ever sold any illustrations? I recently picked up one that is framed and has a sticker on the back with his name and address. I can send you a picture if you would like. It is an illustration of buildings with signs that say closed all over them. It is in black and white. I see no signature. Any help would be appreciated. ~Mark

Unfortunately my Huehnergarth knowledge is very limited. You might want to try Nils Huehnergarth, the writer of the first comment here. Good luck!

Thank you for your help. I believe that the drawing I have is an original. I will see if I can some info from Nils.

For Nils Huehnergarth

If you are the son of JH, I knew your dad when my dad was Art Director for Cosmopolitan Magazine in the 50s & 60s. My dad would take me, as a tween, to Soc. of Illustrators, & AD Guild meetings, where I met many of the soon to be greats, your dad among them. Also, we trolled the NY galleries together for "new blood".
My dad was Anthony C. La Sala. He & JH worked together alot, & I have many sweet things from JH from my dad's collection.

We lost my dad 9/14/07, and I was so hoping your dad was still on earth, and had some reflections on my dad, that I could share with my mom. They had been married 64 yrs. Your dad & mine worked together when your dad was just establishing his name, and tho the $$ @Cosmo wasn't a king's ransom, many young artists gained important exposure there. M dad commissioned works from new people he saw at galleries, thus creating a trend away from buying only gallery art to illustrate fiction, features, etc., but rather giving new young, or good established artists lots of exposure. The age of magazine art may be over, but it was so important in helping those brilliant people gain a foorhold.
I have an old Cosmo that has 5 Bob Peak illustrations!
Your dad did a cartoon of my dad in his Cosmo office, based of an ad that my dad did for Cosmo in one of the trades. I treasure it, as well as an original envelope addressed in the JH hand, when he sent my dad some cartoons for possible use in Cosmo.

If this is you, please let me know. The wound is still raw & it would be good to compare notes.

John Huehnergarth is my grandfather and NJH is my Uncle Nils. I am amazed at what you all have to say about my wonderful grandfather.

My father worked with JH and was in the soc. Of illustraters was well. Walter Skibitsky, art director, but I'm not sure which magazine it was that they collaborated on. I have not seen JH in 20 years I think.
